Getting started with HPC

May 7 @ 16:00 - 18:00
Learn what High Performance Computing can do for your company or organization.

The workshop offers you an introduction to High Performance Computing.

What you can expect:

  • System architectures
  • Hardware architectures
  • File systems
  • Performance limits
  • Speedup & Scalability
  • Workload Manager
  • Job Scheduling

The following questions are to be answered:

  • How is an HPC cluster structured?
  • What technical aspects need to be considered when storing data?
  • What are the basic steps for using HPC?

🇩🇪Language: German

🗣️Speakers: Dr. Kai Himstedt & Dr. Hinnerz Stüben

Dr. Kai Himstedt has been working for HITeC e.V. in the EDIH Hamburg project since January 2023. Together with Daniel Speck, he is primarily responsible for the development and operation of the Research Computing Infrastructure, i.e. a cluster system based on SLURM, in this EU project. In the field of high-performance computing, he has acquired extensive knowledge since 2002 in the course of his many years of scientific work with a focus on the development of distributed simulation systems and especially at the Regional Computing Center of the University of Hamburg (2017-2019) and at the German Climate Computing Center (2020-2022).

Dr. Hinnerk Stüben is an HPC user consultant – from 1994-2012 at the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB), since 2012 at the Regional Computing Center of the University of Hamburg (RRZ). He has been giving courses on parallel programming and runtime optimization of HPC software for many years. His work at the University of Hamburg includes supporting HPC beginners.

Together with Kai Himstedt and Nathanael Hübbe, he created the introduction “Getting Started with HPC Clusters” as part of the Performance Conscious HPC (PeCoH) project. This introduction is available online and is suitable as preparation for the event: https://www.hhcc.uni-hamburg.de/learning-hpc/getting-started-with-hpc-clusters-b.html

Disclaimer: This event is offered by HITeC e.V. as part of EDIH Hamburg.

EDIH Hamburg is Part of the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) program. The aim of the program is to equip small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), mid-sized companies and public sector organizations (PSOs) in the Hamburg metropolitan region in particular for the challenges of tomorrow. The requirements for critical infrastructures are changing and new solutions need to be evaluated and implemented – from general digitalization topics to cybersecurity issues, artificial intelligence, distributed infrastructure and high-performance computing.
